Black Tattoos

Forget colorful or white tattoos – these are inked only in solid black. It does not appeal to everyone but it is still a very cool tattooing style. Black tattoos also known as Black-and-gray tattoos is a style of tattooing that uses only black or gray inked either combined or separate. It is believed that this style has originated from the prisons in 1970’s and 1980’s due to the lack of different materials. Prisoners used guitar strings for needles and cigarette ashes for ink. They would design small tattoo machines from motors that have been used in tape recorders. Every tattoo was inked in secret because tattooing was banned in prisons.

Later, this style was popularized in tattoo shops and was renamed black-and-gray. Black tattoo is made by diluting black ink with water to create different tones. Shading is the most important technique of this tattooing style. This technique is applied to many tattooing styles such as Japanese irezumi, Classic Chicano or blackout tattoos that became a huge trend in 2016. Take a look at our collection of black tattoos.
